Shah Rukh Khan detained at immigration checkpoint in US

August 15, 2009 posted by indiatime |

Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood’s biggest superstar, today got the taste of American hospitality, when he was detained at the Newark airport’s international immigration for a couple of hours. Shah Rukh was let go once his identity and the details of visit were confirmed, but the star has now gone on record saying he will never shoot another film in the US, and has also expressed his shock and awe at the humiliation he felt during the 2-hour non-drama.

Although there is still some confusion over why Bollywood’s big icon was stopped at the airport, many in Bollywood’s fraternity have claimed it is Khan’s last name that got him in trouble. That may or may not be true. After 9/11, there is a list of names that the homeland security department has compiled, which is what is referred to at every American airport or at the Immigration checkpoints. That Shah Rukh’s name came up at the name-check just means that someone else with the same name has been on the watch. Nothing more.

Shah Rukh’s indignation at being stopped and detained can be understood in the context of his being India’s biggest celebrity. But that matters little in the context of the United States where, apart from the south Asian diaspora, not many know his name. Why him, not many know outside the south Asian diaspora know about Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar or Sachin Tendulkar or Dhoni. No doubt, these are huge celebrities for the non-resident Asian Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Srilankan and Nepali community. But for those that do not watch Bollywood movies (or don’t know about Cricket), these names aren’t really celebrities.

Is that ignorance? Not necessarily, but possibly. Most Americans have never traveled to this part of the planet and would not know where to point India if shown a world map. Hard to believe, but that is the truth. American media, too, is largely ignorant of Bollywood and overall of India (Last year, Larry King, CNN’s famous interviewer had a hard time speaking a single word on Mumbai or India when live pictures of the Mumbai carnage were being shown on TV).

Having said that, there is another aspect to this. In the past, many celebrities from India would enter the US on visitor visas. Once inside, they would perform in dance and song shows, making a lot of money at that. The US government viewed that as work performed and balked because it hadn’t allowed the celebrities to come and work in the US, but only to visit. So now, most celebirties who do these song and dance shows have to get a P-2 performer visa, meant for entertainers. I myself know of many Indian celebrities (though not of Shah Rukh’s fame) and entertainers, who had a hard time at the immigration checkpoints because their sponsors hadn’t taken care of the proper documentation fo them. So these folks would come to the US all the way from India with visitor visas stamped on their passports, and then when asked by an immigration officer about the purpose of their visit, would tell them about some singing performance etc. But then that was contrary to the original permission given only to visit and not work.

Shah Rukh’s case is surely not about the performer visa, but about his name popping up in the name check database. That name-check issue still keeps haunting American celebrities and many other American citizens, including US senators and business elite. Several Americans themselves are still on the no-fly list for no fault of their own. That’s just the way it is after 9/11.

The rude shock for Shah Rukh may have been that nobody inside the immigration detention center knew of him. That just shows how limited Bollywood’s reach is. What can you say? One problem with celebrities is that they keep telling us they miss privacy. And when they get a touch of reality, the next minute they start missing their celebrity. What is the big deal about waiting for a couple of hours anyways? No big social cause was coming to an end except for some delay at some stupid dance show, right?

The only person who definitely could have made it past any of the US airports anytime anyday ever is still Gandhi. And he too left little to chance, wearing what he did, hiding nothing. To this day, the 62nd birthday of India’s independence, he remains India’s biggest celebrity to the rest of the planet. And that’s a fact.

I think the Indian government should step in and lodge a formal complaint to the USA. Shahrukh Khan is an Indian icon and he is being discriminated against because of his religion.

  3. shiraz on August 15, 2009 5:54 pm

Shahrukh Khan is not a world celebrity. He is an Indian celebrity and has gold-like status in India and middle east. But noone knows him in America. And this has nothing to do with US government or America. This is just one American immigration officer who is just doing his job. Why do some insist that every American should know who India’s icons are?

  4. humiliated on August 15, 2009 5:55 pm

This is an outrage. Shahrukh khan is the biggest supperstar of the world. He should be treated with honour and dignity.

  5. moti on August 15, 2009 6:02 pm

    @humilated
And you are a big fat idiot, humiliated, eating all those suppers all these years. You need to spend less time watching bollywood movies and more time improving your spellings.

  6. mshah on August 15, 2009 6:24 pm

I think this is all being blown out of proportion. Why should we care about an actor not being pampered somewhere on the planet? This guy has gotten too much adoration already. More than he deserves. In fact, each and every the so-called celebrities have been celebrated way too much. Even Amitabh, Lata, Sachin all of them. The only time they like their privacy is when it’s time to pay their taxes.

  7. Vinoy on August 15, 2009 8:41 pm

India is a country of idiots. I may be one too but this monkey of an actor is definitely one. Every country has the right to follow its own rules at the airports and if any one from this land of fools thinks he should be declared immune from it simply because the foolish masses of his country regard him as a celebrity, he is certainly living in fools’ paradise(which mera Bharat mahan is!).

One woman minister of the government-an ex-air hostess- retorted that Americans too should be subjected to the same ‘treatment’in India. Now this woman should have known it better than us that if Americans were ever subjected to rigorous security checks, they would willingly go through the process rather than making a fool of themselve as this fellow called shahrukh has done.Incidently, the lethargic security check at the indian airports was responsible for the immigration of swine flu virus!

And look at the way the Indian media idiots have been behaving over the ‘incident’!For them it has become an issue of insult to the nation! When that greatest of Indians,APJ Abdul Kalam was subjected to security check by an American airline staff here, they never made such a hue and cry!Perhaps, according to these bastards, Kalam is a much smaller fry than this fellow who has no acting talents whatsoever! This is how small men and primitive societies behave.

Who the F* is Sharukh Khan? Nobody knows this name in the US of A. Get real.

  9. salman khan on August 15, 2009 9:07 pm

Shah Rukh is not India’s biggest icon. I am. I have a better 6-pack, more acting talent and better yet I am single. Shah Rukh’s success is a fluke. He is the perfect case of an average actor who has got lucky.

  10. babloo on August 15, 2009 9:31 pm

Media keeps saying this is discrimination because his name is Khan. That is not true. There must be so many other Khans living in the USA. Shahrukh is not the first one with that name. This is just a stunt to promote his next film. His movies aren’t doing well at the box office and he just wants to be in the news.

  11. don on August 15, 2009 9:40 pm

If Shahrukh is so upset about being singled out, where was his outrage when 3000 people died at the WTC? Indian celebrities are rude and airheaded morons. They think to much of themselves. This guy is almost 50year old and he still plays 20 year olds in movies. What a moron.

  12. singh on August 15, 2009 10:17 pm

Ambika Soni is stupid. She is upset because nobody is frisking her.

  13. Light on August 15, 2009 11:16 pm

  14. vidya on August 16, 2009 12:05 am

Everyone is saying he was humiliated, embarrassed and harassed. He was just asked a few normal questions that are asked of everyone who comes to the USA. What does he want? A red carpet laid out for him from Bombay to Newyork? I can’t believe these people are so ignorant. And all this drama because he had to spend an extra 120 minutes? What an idiot.

  15. mehul on August 16, 2009 3:36 am

This kind of racial profiling began after 9/11 and continues to this day. But more surprising is Shah Rukh Khan’s desire to seek special privilges and discounts on account of being a celebrity. That sounds quite childish and immature. All the money in the world and all the fame and celebrity can’t bring you grace and class. THAT is the problem with India’s fake celebrities.

  16. reena on August 16, 2009 4:50 am

I believe shah rukh is an artist with a huge fan following and no matter whether you watch his movies or not, he is a great icon of india. Anytime such a thing happens to an indian icon, feeling a sense of outrage is but expected and but natural. Americans should apologise to shah rukh for this humiliating treatment.

  17. Naveen on August 16, 2009 11:54 am

    Maturity, people, maturity.
It all comes down to this: America knows how to protect itself. They don’t give a damn of what everyone thinks. India, like many other countries, care too much about what others think (especially America). First, learn to take care of oneself and its citizens. Why complain, complain, complain? We have so much problems to take care of.
Abdul Kalam showed the right attitude (and that too happened in India).

  18. Priyadevi on August 16, 2009 1:36 pm

I would just like to state, as an American, I find this disgraceful!

  19. desi nri on August 16, 2009 4:46 pm

This is a publicity stunt by SRK. And why does he have to drag indian embassy and indian government in his private travel? This is a private visit to make money on which he may not even pay taxes in india. For indian government this is an opportunity to win muslim vote banks, nothing else. If they are so sensitive to racism, they should end quota system in india.

  20. hot tea on August 16, 2009 5:38 pm

Similar thing happend to me as well. But I am not a celebrity and I did not raise any stink about it. I was asked to wait back and had to answer several questions by a senior immigration officer or supervisor or someone, who let me go after realising that something on my visa stamp was his embassy’s fault and not mine. In fact, he apologised to me immediately and said sorry for inconvenience etc. Matter closed.

  21. Priyadevi on August 16, 2009 10:53 pm

Desi.. I doubt this is a publicity stunt. He would need the complicity of the US government for it to work. I HARDLY think they would be willing to point out the flaws in the system they have been trying to hide just to make Shah Rukh more famous. Especially not to the international community.

This is happening FAR too often in my country… and sadly, those of us who know who Shah Rukh is are painfully few. I fully believe this story unraveled EXACTLY how he said. Sadly, most Southern Asians had the ability to call in help when facing this situation.

You must understand, that my country has rewritten it’s laws.. so that these innocent people who face this can be detained indefinitely without anyone being told what happened to them.

It is a disgrace and a shame. It is treasonous to the very ideas my nation’s constitution lauds. Yet, nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

  22. Priyadevi on August 16, 2009 11:03 pm

And Moti, before you start insulting the physical appearance and habits of a person, perhaps you should meet them first to be certain you are correct.

I guess it is too much to ask. You also attacked his “spellings” in a rather ironic manner. The word is spelling, without an “s” at the end. I usually have a bit to much class to point such things out. However, you insisted on making this the topic.

  24. seloo on August 17, 2009 4:04 am

Priyadevi brings up a good point that this has been going on in the USA for a while now and it used to be different. This has to do with patriot act and the consequences of the United States being attacked by al-qaeda. However, the radical change and undermining in personal privacy laws is something that many americans, even many right-wing radicals in the USA are not happy about.

  25. indiatime on August 17, 2009 5:54 am

    update:
Shah Rukh Khan was interviewed in Chicago and seems to me that he has gotten over his initial overreaction to the incident. He didn’t want to indulge in seeking apologies from anyone and said that he does not want to harbor or propagate any negativity. Good for him.

    > What is the big deal about waiting for a couple of hours anyways? No big social cause was coming to an end except for some delay at some stupid dance show, right?

SRK said he was humiliated and angry, as i’m sure many of you would be too in that situation. That doesn’t mean he asked for any special treatment to be boarded quickly. You are generalizing….

  27. Ali on August 18, 2009 2:52 am

Well, welcome to reality… and welcome to USA. If a former president can be frisked and questioned then why not SRK..so what he is biggest South Asian star… so what Abdul was the former President of India…What is India…Only 1.2b people live there. The biggest democratic country in the world…Well, I guess being a president or the biggest celebrity of the biggest nation is not enough, what matters is you are India and because there are many dumb arrogant immigration officers who will try to humiliate us for no good reason just to show their power…But it’s not all the officers are the same. Some are nice and respectful. But as we all know there are some bad apples out there. I love SRK and like India as my neighbor country. I am from Pakistan I believe India is our big brother. And we should all live in peace and harmony

  28. challa on August 18, 2009 9:50 pm

He does not tell what irrelevent questions were asked this time & not last time . It has something to do with his latest sponsors who are likely to be it the Jihadis list in USA. Can we know their names & backgrounds? Also see the real incentives for JIhadis — 72 virgins , All luxuries in Paradise etc. See in Google ‘ X rated Paradise” The mullahs & Bukharis should sue google or answer & admit all that as true ..will they do it ?

    Shahrukh was just detained.

But US have held the whole world to hostage by their huge debts and err.

Shahrukh was embarrassed to see himself detained in front of fans who knew him.

US has raped the world numerous times through the ill actions of their Mariners, Army whenever they’ve invaded a country.

Shahrukh says he’ll never film in the US.

But I say, why the f should Bollywood (a sick name, as I’d prefer ‘Hindi Film Industry’) always lick Hollywood’s feet then …

Hey SRK, do accept the dinner invitation from Arnold Schwatznegger … he might throw some juicy bones at us Indians …

The Al-qaida and like taliban which is more liken organise by muslim it is wanted by USA and the World, being Sarukh khan posses the name of Muslim there must be some misunderstanding, but I would like to say its not the fault of being posses that name or being a muslim but the fault or ignorance of the Director or concern department of film shooting. Its sad to hear that Khan would not go to USA and present the world the best intertainment, he should not think of humself but for the Country ( India). thanks.

Shah Rukh detained at USA airport? BULLSHIT IT was all a publicity stunt for Mr & Mrs Khan. Skr has a 10years USA visa. No one can detain him for 3 hrs even if they want to !

whats more idiotic than khan’s dismay at being held up for hours and people missing out on his celebrity is airport security fear of the name “khan.”

The immigration people were just doing their job , celebrity or not.

The venets an dhis gimmichs over past few months and days leave sno one in doubt that it was stage manged to get publicity, promity to Priyanjaka nad Rahul has made this man arrogant.

Everyone has to go through the process. In India we think otherwise.
