Another lonely senior citizen killed. Another highrise on its way.
June 10, 2009 posted by indiatime |
A 74-year old widow living alone in a Mumbai apartment, was found dead yesterday, stabbed in the back and chest and neck.
And thus, Laxmi Sangoi has now become part of an eerie statistic in the city of Mumbai, where senior citizens living alone are being targeted by unknown assailants for an unknown purpose. This is the eighth murder in Mumbai this year alone, where a senior citizen living alone in their place of residence has become the victim of a deadly crime.
The police didn’t find anything of value missing from the apartment. Or so they thought. In a place like Mumbai, you don’t have to have anything valuable inside the apartment, since the apartment itself is worth all the value there is, here.
The question of motive begs a more serious consideration with possibly a more sinister conclusion. Who would benefit the most by such acts? In the central part of Mumbai, an apartment vacancy can translate into multiples of millions for many - the next of kins, the developers, the builders, the local politicians.
Where the needle of suspicion must stop is a welcome guess. But the suspicion-meter points to a conspiracy bigger than what one would imagine otherwise. It is rather improbable that all around the city of Mumbai, the sons and daughters of old senior citizens are plotting their parents’ murders to bag the family real estate. Not that there aren’t people who would do that, but 8 in a row in less than 6 months and still unsolved to this day, points to an organized methodology by a group that seems to be systematically fnding such an operation.
The other living units in the building where this unfortunate lady lived, had already been vacated or were being rented as office space. So this one more vacancy was all that was needed to turn this lot of land into an attractive proposition for many. That such a vacancy would come naturally one day was a foretold truth. But nobody, especially in Mumbai, is willing to be patient over such matters, it seems.
Organized killings of lonely senior citizens for real estate development. This is what Mumbai has come down to. The relatives visiting the Sangoi residence spoke in hushed tones, probably afraid of the ‘walls that listen’. Those walls wouldn’t be there in a week, I can tell you. This land lot is up for sale and gone in a jiffy. Another highrise, a few more millions, and a murder statistic nobody gives a hoot about. A 74-year widow you say? How many more did she otherwise had to live, right?
