Murder, deceit, politics and sitting ministers and MPs

June 7, 2009 posted by indiatime |

The summer of 2006 saw two deadly murders of two wellknown politicians from the state of Maharashtra. Both murders occurred in or near Mumbai. One was Pramod Mahajan, one the top leaders of his party who was shot to death by his own brother Praveen at the former’s home. The other was Pavan Raje Nimbalkar, shot to death by hired gunmen on the Mumbai-Pune highway. Although Pavan Raje Nimbalkar’s wasn’t shot by his own brother, it has now come to surface that his murder was indeed masterminded by his first cousin Padmasingh Patil, the man who mentored his younger cousin into politics, but eventually had him murdered buy the supari killers or hired goons.

Yesterday, Padmasingh Patil, a current member of India’s parliament, was arrested on charges of double murder. The police arrested him at the government residence of his son, who is the current industries minister in the Maharashtra state cabinet. Also arrested were the hired killers themselves, a local politician in Mumbai and a few from Patil’s hometown of Osmanabad, Maharashtra. And still absconding is another one of the hired killers, who is said to be a driver to the top politician from another state (UP).

The hired killers have so far revealed that the parliament member also wanted them murder Anna Hazare, a famous social activist from the state.

Nimbalkar, the killed politician, himself was under cloud for misusing Crores of Rupees from the local cooperative of which he was the chairman. The scam involved him funding a huge land lot near Mumbai with funds from the cooperative and then putting the same land lot as collateral to borrow additional funds from the same cooperative.

The murder suspect Patil is also a close friend and a relative (brother-in-law) of Sharad Pawar (Nationalist Congress party leader and India’s minister of Food and Agriculture and formerly the Defense minister).

The allegations and suspicions against Padmasingh Patil have been around for last almost three years. Why the sudden surge in the CBI activity now? There’s a reason for that. Had Pawar’s Nationalist Congress party been a little more successful during the recent elections, the arrest would certainly not have happened. That it did happen is an indication that another Maharashtra politician - Vilasrao Deshmukh, the former chief minister of the state and now a cabinet minister, now wields more power at Sonia Gandhi’s feet than the once mighty Pawar.

Not to be outdone by the Congres and the Nationalist Congress, Nitin Gadkari, BJP president of Maharashtra state is also under cloud, these days. Yogita Thakre, a 7-year old girl was recently found strangulated to death in his Honda car at his private residence.

This is not the first instance of a politician being nabbed for the murder of another politician. There have been scores of such incidents. In the last parliament 125 members were said to have had criminial cases against them.We don’t know the figure in the present parliament. The situation in India is grave not only because of criminalization of politics but also because of politicization of criminials.Day is not far off when a Criminal with cases of murder against him might become India’s prime minister, the highest office in the land having already been……

Maharashtra is looking more like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Maharshtra government did nothing for last 3 years because the home ministers belong to the same party as this murder suspect. Shameful on the part of the government and all the coalition parties that must have known about this but kept quiet.
