Bad apples

November 14, 2008 posted by indiatime |

Lately, three non-resident Indians have been adorning the gossip columns of some foreign media. One was convicted yesterday in Los Angeles, another one is under trial in Hampshire, UK and yet another one has just been arrested by the Atlanta police.

anand jonIn Los Angeles, famous Indian-American fashion designer Anand Jon, who was arrested last year for accusations multiple counts of rape and molestation, was found guilty by the Los Angeles jurors. The members of the jury agreed with the prosecutor’s argument that Anand Jon was a sexual predator who lured young women with a promise of work as models, and then degraded, humiliated, assaulted and raped them. Anand will be sentenced on January 13th and faces life in prison with earliest eligibility of parole after 67 years in prison. Recently, Indian government, through the consulate general in San Francisco, made a plea on behalf of the now convicted Anand Jon.

maninder pal kohliIn Hampshire, England, Maninder Pal Singh Sohli told the court that his enemies forced him to have sex with 17-year old Hannah Foster who was later found murdered. Kohli claimed that he pleaded with his captors who had bound and gagged him, to let him go and that he was a married man with kids. Kohli’s forced sex excuse is meant to explain how his biological fluids got on the body of Miss Foster. Back in March of 2003, within days of Hannah Foster’s brutally murder, Maninder Pal Kohli escaped to India, eluding the British authorities for almost a year. In June of 2007, he was extradited to England to stand trial in a Hampshire court.

commander selvamLast week, the Atlanta police arrested a self-proclaimed Hindu priest of the Hindu Temple of Georgia, who was illegally practising medicine and milking gullible disciples by billing thousands to their credit cards. Dr. Commander Selvam, who claims to be a great scholar able to relieve problems from neck pains to all kinds of mental, material stress and conflicts had been under the law enforcement and the local media scanner for last several months. His divine abode is now threatened by the real possibility of spending time in a slammer.
