Yet another Indian woman is paraded naked
October 15, 2008 posted by indiatime |
I recently wrote about a terrible need felt by people in some parts of India, to punish women by parading them naked in public.
In another such shameful incident, an NRI (non-resident Indian) woman near Jalandhar, Punjab, was paraded naked in public in front of her own children by the villagers and the village chiefs. Her crime? She had apparently invited a painting contractor over to her place to have the house renovated and painted. The village chief and several villagers barged into her house, removed her clothes and then proceeded to punish her by parading her naked in front of the whole village as the rest of the villagers took movies and snapshots of her using their cellphones.
Just the other day, India’s former president spoke to the press, beaming with pride about the coming moon mission and his vision of India being one of the lead explorers of the moon-mars-earth complex by year 2020. I think we should delay exploring the moon-mars-earth complex as it is much more important to explore the psychosocial loon-arse complexes of village perverts and village idiots in our country.
Asked why the villagers had punished the woman thus, the village chief defended his and his goon’s actions, claiming that some in the village had indeed seen the woman in compromising position with the painter.
A US government advisory states thus,
“….U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India. Western women continue to report incidents of physical harassment by groups of men. Known as â€Eve-teasing,†these incidents can be quite frightening….”
An advice on an Irish travel site, who only yesterday, asked for suggestions on traveling alone in India:
“….Female travellers needn’t be paranoid, just aware of their surroundings. Dress conservatively and use women-only train carriages where available. The worst that normally happens is stares and the odd comment, but an ‘engagement’ ring is a helpful accessory….”
Yet another site has a tip for solo women travelers to India:
“…Do not make prolonged eye contact with any males; it can be seen as a sexual invitation…”
Recent reports have put India at 117th in a list of 119 countries on the hunger index list, with only Bangladesh and Nepal below us. If there were a sexual hunger index, India would probably fare at the very bottom. I wonder where India’s religious and political leaders are when such incidents happen, and I wonder why they do not suspend everything else they’re doing to focus on this very basic humanitarian issue.
Yesterday, India’s government was locked up in a court battle with some political parties in deciding whether an archeological site in southern Indian ocean had any religious significance or not. I think there are more important issues going on in this country, especially inhuman atrocities against women, that make one of the oldest civilizations on the planet look like some jungle tribe from a bad movie.
Actually, I take back what I said before. From ancient times, we do have this history of parading women naked and insulting them in a very dehumanizing way. The great epic Mahabharata speaks at length about the public disrobing of Vastraharan where queen Draupadi was assaulted in front of important dignitaries and her own family, with her enemies trying to rip her clothes off in public. So this seems to be a tradition, a part of our culture, then. It also means that not much has changed during last several thousand years. What has changed is that the onlookers now have cellphones with cameras.

It is about time government pass the law not to take law in their hand and prosecute those who do such barberic instances or may be indian woman need to wear burkha like muslims do where by woman cannot get in touch with men and man does not get in touch with woman on other hand that systems proves non practical in this modern era. We should consentrate on law and order instead of space programe. If we are civilized nation than think what would happen in western world when they hear about these kind of atrocities commited by so called greatest Democracy, and look at the Christain plight in Bihar, It is a wake up call for Indian Governmnet .
Just passing laws is not going to help anyone.. We need a mind set change with in society.

I commented on the sexual proclivity and libidinous nature of Indian males elsewhere on It’s India Time (Under Tirumala Reddy’s murder case) Just like I anticipated, my views were spurned by some readers who assumed the moral high ground with their holier-than-thou attitude.
I am not one bit surprised at this barbaric behavior of some Indians, who have the chutzpah to consider themselves the most civilized creatures on earth ! All I can say now is whatever money I was depositing into SBI will all be withdrawn forthwith, since there is no end to the vanity and stupidity of India, wasting the precious foreign exchange on its unwanted space programs.
Hello Joseph Christie, Ph.D
Please don’t withdraw money from SBI.If you withdraw money from SBI, the bank will be closed, save SBI.Save SBI Save SBI Save SBI Save SBI Save SBI
Socrates, that would be because of the opinion that “foren” women are with loose morals? By the way, what gave you the idea that Public disrobing ( vastraharan ) was a part of our culture (even back then)? the Mahabharata is a description of a series of events, not a bloody social documentary. the disrobing was a part of the story to point out that the bad would go to any length to insult the righteous.
proper education(not indian standard high school education, which sucks!) is the only answer to these problems. the girl should sue that damn chief! oh by the way, even though i am an indian, i admit that rural areas are Full of perverts from any age except kids! that is why people are embarassed to have sisters in india
the incident that a woman was paraded naked is rather horrifying…those responsible for this should be punished severely…even if their allegation that they say the woman in a compromising position with the painter is true.this is not the way they must do…this shows their immaturity…i pray to god that all the idiots involved in this crime be given 10 times severe punishment as given to this women
This chief and other should be lashed in front of the villages so this does not happen again,
These guys are MAD. Leave the woman and let her do what she chooses.
Get into real world and come out of this dark days
This is not a phenomenon limited to India as the more ghastly instances are a regular feature in Pakistan. I am sure all have heard of the Mukhtaran Mayee case, but she was brave enough to challenge the sytem and has won the hearts of millions in the country.
I beleive the people of sub-continent are kind of eunochs, they need to prove their manhood by degrading the women, as apparently that is the only way they seem to enforce their superiority. Its a real pity and we are ashamed of such atrocities happening both in India and Pakistan.
For you, thank you for highlighting this issue and hope you keep up the good work, may be some day the awareness will revive the dead souls of these monsters.
Its simply ridiculous things like that happening in 21st Century and still we are here just making a news and no one takes action. I think those people should be hanged to death to humiliate a lady like that. You gotta respect life and woman. If not get them out of this earth.
Take action and get them out atleast there gotta be one India who has got balls to do something and not just talk..
Nizi
It is really a shame to do so but at the same time we cannot refer vastraharan as a tradition. In any developed, underdeveloped countries such incidents happen and it cannot be generalised to the whole community. Government should step in with iron hands and try to punish the culprits.
To everybody for any incident please do not generalis.
We can develop a country which wants to develop but what can one do with a country which does not seem to want to develop? Laws are useless without proper mechanisms in place to make sure they are followed. Dont blame the politicians,it is the people who “elected” them…unless the ppl want change nothing can be done
HANG THE VILLAGERS . AND THEN HANG THE PAINTER FOR HIS STUPIDITY AND SELFISHNESS. THE WOMEN DID KNOW HARM, SHE IS JUST A BEAUTIFUL WOMEN. THE PAINTER GOT LUCKY BUT HAD KNOW MORALS TO STAND UP FOR HIS ACTIONS. THE VILLAGERS WERE JELOUS FULL OF ENVY THEY WANTED A PEICE OF THE WOMEN SO THEY FORCED UPON HER LIKE ANIMALS. YOU CAN NOT EDUCATE OR TEACH MORALS TO ANIMALS.
Yousef… thank you for your post. The American media has said nothing about the case of Mukhtaran Mayee. I always admire anyone who has the bravery to stand up for what is right, even if it means they might be harmed for it.
I will make sure to begin reading about this woman tonight so that I may learn more of her story.
Some parts (and people)of India appear to be living in the dark ages.
I will go to the m***f**ing village and get that behanka Loda Village headman and his m** ka l** goons and go to thier house,,, I will make sure that all their mothers are r*** in front of the whole village,,, Dear United States, I as an Indian give you all the liberty to go and kill all the mofos in that f**ing village,,,Us bhuda Thakur m***ch** ki maa c****
Kal and Pratyush,
Morons like you should be hung who see sleaze in tragedy.
The story is a tragic indictment of people in rural India, north India in particular. Similar behaviour is observed in Pakistan and in many muslim societies.
This appears to be another “honour” related incident and is attributable to the influence of Islam in north India since the 11th century AD.
It is incorrect to compare the story of Draupadi’s vastraharan to the Punjab case. Draupadi was at the centre of a political maelstrom and was the apparently powerless victim of bestial behaviour (till she was rescued by the never ending clothes that appeared by divine providence).
I think continuing education, prompt action by the authorities together and funding for women’s NGOs will over a period of time eradicate this corrosive thinking.
We need harsher punishment for people who are involved in women abuse, child abuse ( a myth in India), religious fanatics who attack other religion and religious places, corrupt officials, tax evaders etc.
Then I consider India progressed. Progress not going to Moon for India but when every child goes to school and women feels safe. Instead getting half fashion sense from western world, look at there social justice, protection and community welfare programs for the poor and disabled. These also contribute to a modern society.
For S: Hung? Us,,,they could do that to you if you stole a piece of metal from a factory,,only thing - they would beat you to death not hang you…
Draupadi was no one bad, maybe you guys are
I am Italian, married with an Indian man. Now 17 years. I Thougth that in India people were different but when I came first time I saw that India was as in ancient times.
I hope, for good Indians, that Sonia Gandhi will not forget all the sacrifices done by Mahatma Gandhi because India cannot forget Him.
Everywhere there are these problems but in India this problem is caused by the big differences between people. God bless India.
Though i am an Indian, i wont be praising my country, if it comes across such terrible incidents. Even though the woman is compromising position with any person, that is totally her wish, her lookout. No one nor the chief nor the villagers have any right to take any such shameless decisions for anyone. But this should not be compared with Draupadi Vastraharan in the religious epic “Mahabharata” anyways. All the people involved in this incident should be punished crucially in front of public, so that no one in future thinks about doin such crime.
hey i think they should funking kill those villager and those people who have no respect for any women , one hand Indian people pray of girls and second they try to kill young girl. u guys must know in India so many stupid and funk en ass hole, try to miss use girl for fun and most of poor girl. am sure Indian government not going to do nothing on this topic about women. because people never change and never change there mind on ,so many people they always think Indian girl are there foot shoes . but some day those women will show them what they have, because in Mahabharata who ever tried to take queen Draupadi clothes at last they all die and am sure these same going to happen those who disrespect and miss used the Indian girls or say Indian women. and god will help them and am 100% sure this will happen soon ok
couldn’t agree more. indians need to move with the times: stop locking up girls when they reach puberty, make the caste system illegal, and kop on in general in relation to sexuality and social control.
well after reading that shocking article, i wish i am there when they try and do that to a women. pussys, there women themselves little pervert wankers.and then parents from here want women to get married abroad, why? so they can marry men that are far worse than westernised men like me
