India’s most polluted places

The Blacksmith Institute, a New York based environemntal organisation, has named world’s worst polluted places and India has the distinction of housing 4 of these.

1. Sukinda, Orissa:
Sukinda valley in Orissa has been named the world’s 4th most polluted place. The pollution coems from the chromite ore mining, and almost 70% of surface water (60% drinking water) is said to be polluted with cancer-causing hexavalent chromium. One fourth of the villagers living in the area have been affected. Infertility, stillbirth, and birth defects are common.

2. Vapi, Gujarat:
Vapi, in Gujarat has been named the 5th most polluted place in the world. A thousand-plus acre region that comprises more than 50 industrial estates, Vapi’s chemical industries contaminate the drinking water with more than 60-times the amount of heavy metals than normal. There is a very high incidence of various cancers, stilbirths, infertility, and birth defects.

3. Mahad, Maharashtra:
Only an hour’s driving distance Mumbai, The Mahad industrial estate is home to more than ‘1800 tons of hazardous sludge’ that has accumulated and has never been contained safely. More than 3 lakh people in Raigad district are said to be directly affected by the chemical toxins.

4. Ranipet, Tamilnadu:
Only a couple of hours driving distance from Chennai, Ranipet’s leather tanning industry has caused accumulations of over 1.5 million tons of toxic waste. Over 3 million people are directly affected by the Ranipet toxins.

The Blacksmith Institute has identified 65 high-risk areas in India that are said to be hazardous for human living due to various contaminants and pollutants. Not surprisingly, the high-risk 65 places include several of India’s major metros and cities - Mumbai (Dahisar, Mahad, Tarapur), New Delhi (Vishwas Nagar), Kolkata (Aruputo. Tangra, Picnic Grdens), Hyderabad (Edulabad), Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, etc.
