A billing blooper nails the East India Company

June 23, 2007 posted by indiatime |

A warehouse owned by the British East India company found itself in the list of chronic defaulters who did not pay their dues to the Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) in Orissa. The warehouse, the CESU defaulter’s list showed, had dues totalling about Rs. 68000.

The British East India Company in India had lost all its glory and power and ptactically ceased to exist in the 1860s after the British government stopped supporting it. The official records kept showing the little warehouse in Danpur, on the outskirts of Kendrapara, as owned by the British East India Company, and the electricity bill was probably sent to the warehouse in the name of the East India Company.

The blooper was noticed during an audit of 3000 non-paying defaulters, and the officials who initially believed the East India Company in the records to be some local outfit using the historical company’s good name, were shocked to learn that the defaulter in question was none other than the East India Company itself.

The local officials have now erased the East India Company’s name from the list of defaulters. Little do they realise that the electricity bill for the warehouse is just pocket-change of what the British East India Company really owes this country. There is no restitution or reparation that can ever compensate for what the East India Company stole from this country. Nothing, nothing at all, would ever repay the lost freedom, and decades of enslavement and occupation that was suffered at the hands of the company government.
