Mukesh Ambani’s tower of babel

June 1, 2007 posted by indiatime |

“…..And they said….let us build us a city, and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven, and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men builded….”
- Genesis (11:1-4)

Mukesh Ambani is building a new home in Mumbai. Rising almost one-eighth of a mile in the sky, the 27-storeyed wonder will house the 21-st century home of India’s first trillionaire. Named ‘Antilia’, the new tower on Mumbai’s Altamount Road will become the new headquarters of Mukesh Ambani’s prodigal empire.

The mythical islands of Antillia, also known as isles of the blessed, or Fortunate islands, are part of the Atlantis folklore. These were mythical islands (islands that are seen on some maps but don’t have a geographical counterpart) believed to have existed somewhere to the west of Portugal.

It’s not pure coincidence that Mukesh Ambani’s new home would be named after fortunate islands, or the islands of the blessed. In a metropolis that boasts a six-figure population of people without homes, having a square foot of land is itself no less than a stroke of luck. But with 3 helipads, 6 parking floors, a gym floor, an entertainment floor, a few guest floors, Ambani’s new private heaven will occupy more than 48,000 square feet of the primemost land in one of the most expensive cities on the planet.

Soon, Mukesh Ambani will be enjoying his opulent mornings in the gardenesque balconies overlooking the puny vastness of the Arabian ocean. His pleasant countenance hiding his uncountable wealth, this modern day nimrod will be looking up to the Gods of fortune from atop his tower of babel. But there’s every chance that Ambani’s new tower, just as the original babylonian marvel, would epitomise the unbridgable, ever-widening gap between the trillionaires and the rest of us tramps. A fortunate island in the midst of a flat-broke ocean of humanity!
