Winds of change in Pakistan

May 6, 2007 posted by indiatime |

At a rally in Lahore, Pakistan’s suspended chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry told thousands of supporters that the days of dictatorship in Pakistan were numbered. “…The idea of dictatorship and collective responsibility are over…”, he said, adding that the nations that don’t learn the lessons of democracy will have to end up paying big price.

Chief justice Chaudhry was sacked by president Musharraf on March 9th, and since then, he has been gaining increasing support not just from the legal community but many other segments as well.

So what’s next for Chaudhry? Does his support come from inside Pakistan alone, or does he also have backers in Washington, D.C. ? How will president Musharaf respond to this growing democratic sentiment?

I have two predictions.

I may be wrong on one of these, but I think it’s going to take a LOT more this time for Musharraf to keep his support. First off, I think president Musharraf will, very soon, plan and make a personal visit to the United States. It has become rather urgent now.

My second prediction is a bit on the bolder side. But here it goes. To win an unequivoval, absolute, and a-few-years-worth-of backing from his friends in D.C., Musharraf will, in a matter of next few months, deliver the ultimate gift to his U.S. counterpart - America’s public enemy number 1 - Osama Bin Laden or their public enemy number 2 - Ayman Al-Jawahiri!

You have raised good points. Declaring emergency is also an option.
