anad_jon_accused_of_rape.jpg CNN is reporting that Anand Jon, the New York-based, Indian-born jewelery and fashion designer for fashion celebrities has been charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assaults, including one involving a 15-year old minor.

Through his attorneys, Anand has denied the charges, calling them fabrications and false accusations by disgruntled models.

Anand Jon has previously been named by India Today as one among 21 “faces of the future”, while East magazine picked him among the A-List of top 20 Asians to watch for the next century. The Consul General of India in New York, Mrs Shashi Tripathi once introduced Anand Jon honoring him at a press conference as one of the outstanding cultural ambassadors of India for his contributions to the world of fashion.

Only time will reveal the truth in Anand John’s case. Indian Americans would only hope that his side of the story checks out, whatever that is. They have already been maligned by the recent spat of predatory behavior by Indian NRIs, especially those in the software business. That behavior was highlighted by NBC’s now-famous show ‘To Catch a Predator’. Several Indian NRIs were captured in a trap set up by law enforcement by luring people who chatted dirty on the internet, with officials posing as minors.

I have talked about this topic before, so not going to dwell too much on it now. And I certainly don’t intend to make light of this sad story. Having said that, I really think we need to re-examine the spices we Indians eat. Somewhere therein is hiding the secret of all these raging hormones. Or is this yet another example of our increasing disengagement with spirituality and morality?
